RICHARD SANDLER: THE EYES OF THE CITY. A ZOOM INTERVIEW
Join us on Thursday October 22nd at 6 pm, when Leica Store New York SoHo’s exhibit curator Rene Perez speaks with acclaimed street photographer and documentary filmmaker Richard Sandler about his book The Eyes of the City. For decades Sandler has roamed New York City streets with his Leica, capturing indelible images of the changing dynamics of the city and the distinctive spirit of its inhabitants.
Sandler’s 2016 book, a collection of work from his 40-year career in photography, chronicles the city between 1977 and 2001. Sandler says of this time, “I had one eye out for soulful and ironic juxtapositions, and the other out to record civic history itself. I shot 4 – 5 rolls of film every day and safely danced with the city’s ghosts."
Sandler’s still photographs are in the permanent collections of the Brooklyn Museum, the Museum of the City of New York, the New York Historical Society, the Center for Creative Photography at the University of Arizona, among many other institutions and private collections. He has been twice awarded a NY Foundation for the Arts fellowship for photography, and fellowships from both the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation and the NY State Council on the Arts for filmmaking.
